Comba Introduces Remote Radio Unit for WiMAX Networks

Comba Telecom System, a wireless enhancement solutions provider, has introduced its new WiMAX-compatible remote radio unit (RRU) to the global market. It aims to enable rapid WiMAX network deployment.

The RRU is an integrated base station RF unit, which can be detached from the BBU (Base Band Unit) and fed with baseband signals through optical fiber. Its design and configuration will reduce CAPEX and improve deployment time for WiMAX network rollout, says the company.

A key feature of Comba's RRU is that it is designed for easy customization for different BBU suppliers in order to expedite integration. The RRU supports point-to-point, star and daisy-chained connection with the BBU to provide a flexible system topology, informs the company.

In addition, its compact, IP65 weatherproof and convection cooling design allows it to operate in various environments from tower tops to underground tunnels. These design features minimize the feeder cable requirements for base station systems and mitigates the challenges network operators face in site acquisition and power supply issues, says Comba.

"The RRU addresses two very important issues of the WiMAX space: speed to market and cost effectiveness," says John Cheng, Comba's director of Product Marketing, Wireless Enhancement. "Comba is actively researching and developing products for current and developing standards such as UMTS, WiMAX and LTE. The WiMAX RRU is the latest addition to Comba's RRU technology, which includes solutions for WCDMA, CDMA2000 and TD- SCDMA."

Key WiMAX RRU specifications:

  • Digital optical interface compliance with OBSAI RP3-01 v4.0 or CPRI v3.0
  • Customizable for third party BBUs (Base Band Units)
  • Operates in 2.3-2.7GHz supporting variable channel bandwidths
  • RF performance exceeds specifications defined in the "WiMAX Forum System Profile"
  • Independent RF channels (TRx) support various multi-antenna architecture: 2x2 MIMO, 4x4 MIMO,  4x4 AAS
  • SDR (software defined radio) enables key parameters to be software configurable (central frequency, channel bandwidth, output power, TDD ratio)
  • Support flexible system topology: point-to-point, star and daisy-chain
  • Built-in self-diagnostic, protection, alarm & error report functions
  • Compact size with minimal footprint facilitates rapid deployment

Comba has its corporate headquarters in Hong Kong and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2003.
