India’s Airtel Offers BlackBerry Pearl

Leading mobile operator in India Bharti Airtel and BlackBerry producer Research In Motion (RIM) are offering BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 smartphone. It comes with a price tag of Rs.21,990 (about $450).

According to Airtel, the phone features include spacious keyboard that allows easy typing and dialing. The flip design opens to a large, vibrant internal display and provides the satisfying finality of ending a call by closing the phone.

Customers will also get smartphone's external display for previewing calendar reminders, email, text messages, and phone calls at a glance.

Today, BlackBerry supports an array of services and companies are offering specialized applications for the device.

It comes with RIM’s mobile email solution and multimedia capabilities. It will offer support for text messaging, picture messaging, Web browsing and built-in Wi-Fi. Customers can share pictures, check the latest sports scores and post content on social networking sites, including Facebook, YouTube, and MySpace.

“This innovative smartphone offers the full power of the BlackBerry platform with advanced communications and multimedia features in a new handset design that is fun and stylish,” said Ms. Frenny Bawa, VP, India for RIM.

Earlier, Canada's operator Rogers Wireless and RIM decided to offer this model (BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220) to consumers from Nov. 4,’08 from $49.99 with activation on any combination of 3 year voice and data plan. It was available with black finish.

During October last year (2008), T-Mobile USA and RIM had introduced BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 smartphone—claimed to be the first BlackBerry flip phone—to U.S. buyers exclusively from T-Mobile.

Bharti Airtel is India’s leading integrated telecom services provider. It claims to have over 82 million mobile customers.
