Why
Facebook Dislikes Breastfeeding Pictures?
Because the leading social networking host feels that breastfeeding can
be promoted even without fully exposing the breasts of mothers. So
Facebook removed such pictures from its site and currently facing furore
of protestors who believe there’s nothing indecent about these images.
The
controversy began a week ago when a U.S. mother Kelli Roman received a
warning notice from Facebook that she was misusing some features on the
Facebook site. And then Facebook removed her pictures from the site,
citing a policy clause under which it won’t allow “obscene” material.
The
social network further clarified that it has nothing against
breastfeeding pictures. But when some other users object to content that
is not decent enough, Facebook’s policy allows it to remove it from the
site.
In the
present case, its policy says that the Facebook site won’t carry
breastfeeding pictures that show visible parts of nipples or areola
(dark circular area around human nipples).
While
protestors are raising questions on Facebook’s policy, mother Roman is
leading an online campaign under the banner: "Hey Facebook,
breastfeeding is not obscene."
As more
people are joining Roman’s campaign, Facebook as well as other websites
are abuzz with all sorts of comments. A few have even posted the removed
pictures on the web.
Some
have commented that there is more obnoxious material that Facebook can
remove. Others are supporting Facebook action, which is based on its
content hosting policy.
