You Can Keep this PC in Your Hands

Of the size of a hardcover book, the AspireRevo is in fact a desktop with graphics and multimedia features. NVIDIA and Acer have introduced this small PC with the introduction of NVIDIA ION-based machine.

Equipped with NVIDIA ION graphics, the system can handle a range of computing needs including high definition video, gaming, sharing digital photos, surfing the web, and other tasks consumers expect from full-size systems, says NVIDIA.

NVIDIA had said in December last year that its new ION platform can transform Atom PCs to deliver experience available in higher-priced laptops and desktops. It said that it’ll enable netbooks, small form factor and all-in-one PCs to play rich media and popular games in high definition. Plus, ION will create new PCs that can fit in the palm of your hand.

The AspireRevo is said to be a small, energy efficient, and affordable system. NVIDIA claims that its ION graphics make this possible with performance that is 5-10 times faster than traditional PCs with integrated graphics.

There are other instances also of processor companies joining hands with computer vendors. VIA Technologies, a company offering x86 processor platforms, says that Samsung has adopted the VIA Nano processor for its new Samsung NC20 mini-notebook. Its features include an integrated 1.3 mega-pixel digital motion camera, 3-in-1 memory card reader, and three built-in USB ports.

Freescale Semiconductor is offering a solution based on ARM technology to produce netbooks that feature 8.9 inch displays, deliver eight hours of battery life between charges, and retail at sub-$200 price points.

Similarly, processors company ARM and commercial sponsor of Linux distribution Ubuntu, Canonical Ltd. have decided to offer the full Ubuntu Desktop operating system to the ARMv7 processor architecture. The offer will address demand from device manufacturers.

The traditional PC market is witnessing other developments also. Qualcomm has introduced a PC alternative named Kayak for Net connectivity in developing markets worldwide. Manufacturers can make a wide range of devices based on the Kayak reference design. Initial Kayak PC alternative units are being manufactured by Taiwan-based Inventec Corporation.

"The AspireRevo is small and quiet enough to go anywhere, yet big enough to handle all the needs of your digital lifestyle," said Gianpiero Morbello, corporate vice president of marketing for Acer.

The NVIDIA ION graphics processor in the AspireRevo supports Windows Vista Home Premium, 1080p HD video with true-fidelity 7.1 audio, games, DirectX 10 graphics, and accelerated video enhancement and transcoding using NVIDIA CUDA technology.
