Netflix Delivered 2 Billion Movies
Netflix, a leading online movie rental service, declares that last week
on April 2, it has delivered the two billionth movie since the company’s
subscription service was launched in late 1999.
The
mark was reached when a Blu-ray version of Sony Pictures Home
Entertainment’s romantic comedy “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” was
delivered to Clay Shannon, a Netflix subscriber in Birmingham, Ala.,
from the company’s distribution center in Atlanta. Netflix said it is
giving Mr. Shannon a complimentary lifetime subscription to the Netflix
service.
As part
of its diversification strides, late last year Netflix had decided to
offer its members movies and TV episodes instantly streamed to their TV
via the gaming console Xbox 360 with the New Xbox Experience.
Also,
it said consumers will be able to stream movies and TV episodes from the
Netflix Web site directly to their living rooms via Samsung’s BD-P2500
and BD-P2550 Blu-ray disc players.
In
another arrangement, TiVo, which offers TV services for DVRs, and
Netflix have joined hands to provide Netflix and TiVo Series3, TiVo HD,
and TiVo HD XL subscribers with the ability to have movies and TV
programs streamed from Netflix to their TVs.
Earlier, Netflix signed separate agreements with the CBS Television
Network and Disney-ABC Television Group to allow episodes of a number of
TV shows to be streamed at Netflix. The two deals added to a growing
library of 12,000 choices that Netflix members could watch instantly on
their PCs and TVs as part of their subscription plans and without
impacting the number of DVDs they receive.
According to the company, it now serves more than 10 million subscribers
and ships approximately two million of its “iconic red mailers” per day
from 58 distribution centers spread geographically across the United
States.
The two
billion deliveries were generated from a DVD library that now spans more
than 100,000 titles, including more than 1,300 that are available in
high-definition on Blu-ray, says the company.
When
Netflix launched its subscription service on September 23, 1999 from a
lone warehouse in San Jose, Calif., the title count was just over 2,000.
It took the company eight years to achieve one billion shipments, in
February 2007, and a little more than two years to deliver the next
billion.
