Broadcom Brings Chumby for Net Entertainment

Broadcom Corporation and Chumby have announced the integration of the Chumby rich media Internet platform into Broadcom's digital television (DTV), set-top box (STB) and Blu-ray Disc system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions.

Chumby enables users to select their favorite parts of the Internet delivered to them in an always-on format. Chumby content currently consists of over 1,000 widgets in 30 different categories ranging from news and entertainment to videos, music, and sports. It’s provided by leading media partners such as CBS, MTV Networks, The New York Times, Pandora, The Weather Channel Interactive, AOL's SHOUTcast and Scripps Networks.

As converged content delivery is expanding, covering TVs, Web, and mobiles, a number of marketers are targeting the emerging market. Recently, Microsoft revealed that China’s Guangzhou Digital Media Group has launched Zhujiang Digital, a connected TV service using Microsoft Mediaroom Internet Protocol television (IPTV) platform. It’s the first time Mediaroom is delivered over a cable network anywhere in the world.

Yahoo!'s Connected TV group has roped in top consumer electronics makers to launch a widget platform for TV that brings Web to living room devices.

And available on new LG Network Blu-ray Disc Players in the first half of 2009, the new arrangement with CinemaNow and YouTube will complement LG's instant streaming service from Netflix.

Researcher Nielsen says that viewing of video on television, Internet, and mobile devices – the Three Screens – continues to increase.

To woo the new groups of entertainment consumers, Chumby delivers thousands of Internet radio stations and podcasts. Its free and open content network enables individual creators to publish content. And Chumby users themselves can share their own user-generated content, including photos, e-cards and more, with family and friends via its integral social network.

Chumby is expanding, bringing users new widgets, media and services, as well as content from the Web.

As a result of this collaboration, says Broadcom, consumer electronics manufacturers will be able to quickly deploy Chumby platform support on Internet-connected TVs, set-top boxes and Blu-ray Disc players without additional cost, external components, or expensive PC hardware.

As an open-source Linux-based platform and "cloud-based" content network with graphics that scale easily to any screen size, Chumby allows users to create a personalized Internet experience without the need to establish a new configuration or install separate software or widgets on each device, thereby enabling new applications and content to be accessed and shared across Chumby-powered devices.

Additionally, Chumby supports a framework with standardized tools for developers and manufacturers to create content.
