Cloud Computing Programs Gaining Momentum
After
the recent cloud computing initiatives of Yahoo!, IBM, SAP, Google, and
others, Platform Computing, a company offering grid and cloud computing
software, has planned to open a Cloud Innovation Centre (CIC) in
Singapore. It aims to provide access to free cloud software, technical
consultants, and training programs to Singapore-based companies.
Located
at Platform Computing Singapore and due to open in May, the company says
that the CIC's goal is to educate enterprises, government organizations,
software vendors and start-ups about cloud technology. The objective is
also to encourage the creation of new products and services based on
cloud computing.
The CIC
is a joint initiative between Platform and the Infocomm Development
Authority (IDA) of Singapore, a government organization.
Of
late,
Yahoo! has joined hands with top U.S. universities
to advance cloud computing research. These universities will
use Yahoo!’s cloud computing platform to conduct advanced research
toward Internet-scale information, ranging from voting records to online
news sources. In this initiative, University of California at Berkeley,
Cornell University, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst will
join Carnegie Mellon University.
In
another case,
IBM and SAP have previewed a technology
that enables the live migration of SAP applications across remote IBM
POWER6 systems via cloud computing. The technology, developed as a part
of the European Union-funded RESERVOIR cloud computing project, is
designed to provide companies with different cloud computing solutions.
Today,
major tech companies are exploring ways to tap the cloud computing
market. Cloud computing, or network-delivered services and software, can
save customers up to 80% on floor space and 60% on power and cooling
costs, and deliver triple asset utilization. This is revealed by IBM, as
it has introduced its
cloud computing services.
Among
others, Salesforce.com, an enterprise cloud computing company, decided
to expand its global strategic alliance with Google by offering
Force.com for Google App Engine. It
aims to accelerate developers’ productivity by connecting two cloud
computing platforms.
Now,
CIC plans to provide an integrated program to educate participants on
this next-generation of IT though workshops, technical consulting, and
free access to computing resources and software for performing proof of
concept and pilot trials.
Qualified start-ups will also get access to Platform's suite of grid and
cloud software solutions. The CIC plans to reach out to over 600 IT
managers, decision makers, and engineers over the next three years to
educate and train Singapore business on the use and benefits of cloud
computing.
According to IDC,
spending on IT cloud services will grow to reach
$42 billion by 2012. Cloud
services are the consumer and business products, services, and solutions
that are delivered and consumed in real time over the Internet.
