Trapeze to Set Up Wi-Fi City in China

Trapeze Networks has bagged the Hangzhou Wi-Fi Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) project, which is claimed to be the largest Wi-Fi MAN in China. Trapeze is deploying more than 3,000 access points in Hangzhou, allowing the city's 6.5 million residents to avail its NonStop Wireless networking. Hangzhou is located 180 km southwest of Shanghai and is a key city in the Yangzi River Delta region of China.

Most of its 6.5 million residents live in eight metropolitan districts and have a high demand for communications, information exchange, and wireless internet access. The Hangzhou government realized that a convenient and flexible communications platform was critical to the development of the city. In response to this challenge, it formulated the "Wi-Fi City" project.

Commnet, a subsidiary of SOYEA Technology, and Trapeze Networks will install the Wi-Fi network over three phases. The first phase will enable Wi-Fi access along Hangzhou's main ring roads, important scenic spots, the central business district, and some residential areas.

Phases two and three will extend that coverage to the entire Greater Hangzhou area. By the end of 2009, the whole of Hangzhou will be blanketed with Wi-Fi connectivity.

"We are very proud to be involved in Hangzhou Wi-Fi City project. This is the first time Trapeze Networks has worked on a city-level Wi-Fi project in China where the entire range of our Smart Mobile products will be used. Trapeze Networks will help the city realize centralized control and management of its wireless network, and creating a valuable example for other Chinese cities looking to deploy Wi-Fi MANs in the future," said Jim Vogt, president, Trapeze Networks.

"With Trapeze Networks' RingMaster network management tool, we can minutely design the position, quantity, and configuration of access points according to number of users and bandwidth demands for a given coverage area. RingMaster will then generate an instructional layout for installation that not only saves manpower, but also ensures that new configurations can be done efficiently and on time," explains Tao Lu, technical director of Hangzhou Commnet. "Trapeze Networks' Mobility Exchange controllers provide data encryption and manage RF security to ensure seamless wireless roaming."

More than half of the Wi-Fi products, solutions and services used in Hangzhou's Wi-Fi Metropolitan Area Network will be provided and managed by Trapeze Networks and Commnet.

Over 3,000 Trapeze Networks' Mobility Point access points, together with Trapeze Networks' Mobility Exchange WLAN controllers and RingMaster management software, will be deployed in phase one.

Wide area Wi-Fi deployments, according to Trapeze Networks, are becoming popular as installation costs drop and maintenance fees become more reasonable. A wireless wide-band network satisfies demands for greater Internet information exchange for businesses, tourists, residences, schools, and emergency services. More developing cities in China are planning to go wireless in the near future, following Hangzhou's lead in enabling its residents to enjoy wireless surfing, wireless VPNs, wireless network leasing, location-based services, Internet-TV, and other applications.
