drumbeats around 3-D technology are getting louder, tech marketers are
trying to develop a new ecosystem to provide an aggressive push to
different 3-D products. Monitors are clearly poised to drive the market
particularly in the gaming and entertainment segments. And iZ3D LLC is a
leading player in the business of 3-D monitors. Thomas Striegler,
CEO of iZ3D, shares his views on the 3-D marketplace with
Rakesh Raman of My Techbox Online.
Can you quantify the market demand for 3-D
monitors?
The promotion and success of 3-D games and 3-D
feature movies drastically increased the awareness of gamers and home
entertainment customers, that 3-D is the next quantum leap in the viewing
experience of electronic content. While professional 3-D niche products
are available for many years, 3-D monitor's capability to display
electronic games and recorded content will increase the 3-D market
potential from a few million dollars in revenue to hundreds of millions in
the next few years.
Do you agree that the major demand will be
driven by entertainment markets?
Entertainment certainly is a major 3-D market
driver. However, content availability is the key to the market growth.
Starting with hundreds of electronic games that are designed for 3-D
playing, 3-D movie on DVD and videos will drive the market into the home
entertainment market segment. And the home entertainment will be the
driver for 3-D demand with 3-D monitors and 3-D TVs replacing the 2-D
products, much as color monitors and color TVs replaced their monochrome
predecessors.
What type of consumers will you be targeting,
as the price of the monitors is exorbitant?
At present 22"W iZ3D monitors at $599 are
hardly prized exorbitantly. However, the sole ubiquitous 3-D content is
electronic games. Therefore iZ3D LLC's target customers are gamers.
Are some computer OEMs also selling your 3-D
monitors?
iZ3D LLC is developing its sales and
distribution to sell 22"W iZ3D monitors via many different channels.
Online and offline retailers, distributors, VARs, and OEMs are all part of
this sales and distribution channel development effort.
How would you equip the channel partners to
develop the market for these monitors in different parts of the world?
Since 3-D is still novel and often confused
with Virtual Reality, customers require introductions to 3-D as a
technology. Channel partners will be equipped in seminars with the
required 3-D technology knowledge, the specific iZ3D monitor operating
skills, set-up and demo training. Marketing and advertising materials
will be cooperatively developed, as needed in different parts of the
world.
Which factors will spur and hamper the demand
for 3-D monitors?
The demand for 3-D monitors and 3-D home
entertainment will be spurred by content availability. While hundreds of
3-D games are currently available, the addition of recorded video and
movie content will spur the 3-D market to phenomenal growth.
