Bharti Airtel, India’s leading mobile services company, has diversified to enter the local entertainment market. It has launched Airtel digital TV, its Direct To Home (DTH) Satellite TV service. The service will be available to customers through 21,000 retail points including Airtel Relationship Centres in 62 cities across the country starting October 9. The company aims to deliver content on multiple consumer screens including mobile handset, computer, and now TV.

Airtel digital TV uses the MPEG4 standard with DVB S2 technology to ensure picture clarity and better audio quality for the consumer. This technology, according to Airtel, is High Definition (HD) ready.

The company says that Airtel digital TV will use 20% larger dish antenna to offer better performance during rains.

Manoj Kohli, CEO and joint MD, Bharti Airtel, said, “Today we are starting a new chapter in our journey, one that adds a new dimension to our existing product portfolio and is a major step towards transforming Airtel from just a telecom brand to a lifestyle enabler. The launch of Airtel digital TV is the culmination of our three screens strategy, which is to be present across mobile phone, computer and TV screens.”

Among other features, Airtel service promises universal remote for both set-top-box and TV and more set-top-box memory for interactive applications, content from World space Radio, interactive applications such as iMatinee (for booking cinema tickets), iTravel (browsing and booking travel packages), iShop (shopping on TV), iCity (for local information), widgets (for stock news), etc. You can also use the service for games.

“We believe that the Indian DTH segment offers immense growth potential,” says Atul Bindal, president, Telemedia Services, Bharti Airtel.

The service will be supported by 24x7 customer care available in 8 different languages, informs the company.
